Mt Barker Fungal Wizardry for Beginners

Get ready everyone! Urban Kulture is back on the East Coast for the 2024 EAST COAST WORKSHOP TOUR to deliver their two beginner hands on mushroom cultivation workshops in person.

Join Urban Kulture for either the '5 Minute Mushroom Kit' (Level 1) or the '5 Minute Grain Spawn' (Level 2) or make the most of the value deal and attend both!

-----------------------------------------

5 Minute Mushroom Kit:
A short course on making mushroom grow kits from grain spawn (Level 1).

This is our introductory gourmet and medicinal mushroom cultivation course.

It's 'all you need to know, to get you growing as fast as possible.'

Here's what you need to know:

The Lingo... The 5 words you need to know to start speaking mushroom cultivation.

The Technique... Learn to create your very own mushroom growing kits in only 5 minutes.

The Aftercare... How to successfully ignore your kits as they do their thing.

The Fruiting... The part where you grow the mushrooms!

The Multiple Harvests... How to get as many mushrooms out of your kits as possible.

The Supplies... What to get and where to get it from.

After the presentation, you will make 2 x mushroom grow kits to take home with you! (Value $35).

You will also receive access to the ‘5-minute mushroom kit’ community group on our website for continued learning and access to a recording of the presentation.

There is no specialised or expensive equipment needed for this technique.

Not only will you have all the mushrooms you can eat, you will never need to buy another birthday or Christmas gift again.

Mushroom kits for everyone!

Workshop Duration: 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Workshop Cost: $90 (includes 2 x take home mushroom kits - Value $35).

-----------------------------------------

5 Minute Grain Spawn:
A short course in making your own grain spawn from liquid culture (Level 2).

The follow on from ‘The 5-Minute Mushroom Kit’ this workshop will expand your mushroom cultivation skillset by dipping your toes into sterile techniques and learning how to make our own grain spawn (in only 5 minutes!).

This course is still very much suited for the beginner and will not require any expensive equipment purchases. You already know how to make fruiting kits from spawn (inoculant) so now it’s time to reduce your per kit cost and dive a little deeper into cultivation by learning how to make your own grain spawn.

Much like the 5-minute kit, 5-minute grain spawn is designed for minimal time inputs, no special equipment and super easy to follow techniques.

Here is a quick rundown of what you will learn:

Some new lingo - Another 5 words you need to know!

How to make a still air box for doing sterile work.

How to take a spore print and make a multi spore syringe.

Grain spawn inoculation using liquid culture or multi spore solution.

Grain to grain transfers for second generation spawn.
How to look after and store your spawn.

After the presentation, you will inoculate and take home 5 x 125g bags of grain spawn which can then be turned into as many as 15 x mushroom fruiting kits!

Of course, this is not just the live event, you will also have unlimited access to a recording of the course, as well as access to the ‘5-Minute Grain Spawn’ group which can be accessed via our website... to ask any questions as they arise, show off your grain spawn grows and be part of a wonderful growing community!

Workshop Duration: 2 hours.
Workshop Cost: $130 (includes 1 x take home liquid culture syringe - Value $20 and 5 x 125g bags of grain spawn - Value $30).

-----------------------------------------

*** BEST VALUE DEAL ***

Book in for both workshops for only $180 (That's $40 off the individual workshop pricing).

-----------------------------------------

Select your preferred workshop session upon booking.

* Please note that your ticket will state the times for the entirety of both workshops at the top, with your selected workshop and times below.

Birdwood Farm Day

Farm Day is excited to partner with the National Motor Museum again in 2024 and as always, promises to have something for to suit every member of the family!

There will be all the usual crowd favourites - freshly baked damper and Devonshire tea, petting zoos, and a host of animal exhibits.

Milking cows, sheep shearing and working dog demonstrations along with log chopping, blacksmithing, restored engines plenty of other attractions to showcase the farming lifestyle and how farming has evolved over time.

Camel rides, bouncy castles, face painting and other amusement rides will be sure to put smiles on everyone’s faces.

As Farm Day is the sole fundraiser for Birdwood Primary School, the school’s representation must not be overlooked. The school will host a variety of retail stalls including our ever-popular Gardening, Sweet Treats and Port and Wine stalls. The students themselves are working hard on creating their own retail spaces in each year level too.

This really is a group effort with the whole school community being involved on some level, putting our best offerings forward for the public to enjoy!

As always, plenty of hot coffee and food choices to keep you full so you can stay and play the whole day long.

Children can use their imaginations while they 'build a city' with foam blocks or enjoy some quiet time colouring in, or challenge each other to giant board games like chess, Connect 4 and Jenga in our Kids Zone.

The Main Stage and Arena areas will host some great entertainers with live music, whip cracking and performances by our very own students.

Not sure how you will see it all? Purchase a Farm Day Trail Bag from the Info Stall by the entrance and it will lead you through the event, collecting as you go, ensuring no corner is left undiscovered.

Have we mentioned that each ticket also provides FREE access to the National Motor Museum?

Springton Open Gardens

Springton Open Gardens

Not just for the Springton folk; we would love to have the Mount Pleasant gardeners come along as well!

Open Gardens in Springton – Sunday 21 April

A number of the wonderful gardeners of Springton have again agreed to open their gardens for the day, to give you inspiration (or even just some hope in this long, dry summer) and an idea of what grows well around here. The gardens are a remarkable mix of native and cottage, rambling and structured, old and new(ish). If this summer has depressed you with too many plants dying at your place, walk around these gardens, talk to the gardeners and see what has (and what hasn’t) worked for them.

The Springton Hall on Graetz Terrace will open at 9.45am and for $10 (cash and card facilities available) get a wristband ‘ticket’, map and garden descriptions. Parking and public toilets alongside the Hall. Gardens open from 10am-4pm (Edenmae from 11am).

Visit the gardens in any order that takes your fancy, however two of the gardens are next door to one another on William Street, and there will be a coffee van outside! What a great way to start a Sunday stroll around Springton. Edenmae Cellar Door is also opening its garden, and offering a free glass of sparkling (white or red) or a free wine tasting to all ‘ticket’ holders. Come and enjoy the garden with a glass of something in hand.

Plants and seeds will also be for sale at the Hall; all things that have been grown in Springton and that do well here. Proceeds of the Open Garden Day and the plant sale support the Springton Progress Association.

Even if you don’t have time or inclination to visit inside any of the gardens, come and see the Hall and the plant sale. Voting forms for the Most Improved Garden competition will be available from the Hall as well (and can be returned to the Hall, Edenmae or the General Store).

Should be a great day.

A BAD YEAR FOR TOMATOES by John Patrick is a comedy play set in the small town of Beaver Haven in New England, America. The action occurs in Myra Marlowe's living room of her small, rented house. It is set in the 1970’s.

Gracious, glamorous Myra Marlowe, fed up with fame after a very long career as a television actress, retreats to the small town of Beaver Haven, Vermont, planning to live quietly and anonymously, write her juicy autobiography, and grow her own tomatoes.
The complaints of her faithful agent and less faithful lover, Tom Lamont, that she is throwing herself away on a backwards backwater of a town, fall on deaf ears, until she gets to know her neighbours: Reba and Cora, the Hospitality Ladies, full of rapid fire gossip and rapid fire questions; woodcutter Piney, impressively bearded and smelling of the great outdoors, who terrifies his victims with the force of his sales pitch, and Willa Mae Wilcox, the widow woman with the purple shutters on her house, who put a voodoo curse on her husband.
With these colourful characters inviting themselves over at every hour of the day, Myra gets no time to write, and in frustration, invents a dangerous, mentally disturbed sister -- based on her first, best-known TV role, Sis Sadie -- to frighten away her neighbours and give her some peace and quiet.
However, the upstanding citizens of Beaver Haven react in unexpected ways to Sadie’s shrill, childlike charms and sad plight, and before her charade is over, Myra finds herself accused of murder! A Bad Year for Tomatoes, John Patrick’s ridiculously clever comedy, with brisk and uproarious dialogue and sharply comedic characters, is a delight for actors and audiences alike.
